Open!

Howling Cow is an NC State fan favorite. And with N.C. Cooperative Extension backed by NC State University and NC A&T University, we thought we should bring some of the joy to you. And it helps that there are a few alumni who miss it!

The dairy on NC State campus, for NC State University, is a brief jaunt of a measly 300 miles east. If that drive is a bit far for ice cream, we’re bringing it to you!

If pen and paper isn’t for you, check out our online order form! Note, all payments are still cash/check only and must be received by May 9th. Make checks payable to Jackson County 4-H.

Poster of flavors.

NC State University boasts a 329-acre dairy farm and a nationally recognized food science program. So it was only a matter of time before they turned their sights to the most delicious option…. ice cream. Like most starts for a renowned research university, we begin our creamy journey in the lab. Beginning as a research project in the 19040s, Howling Cow didn’t make its first off campus debut until the ‘70s at… well, where else but the NC State Fair. And in 2008, it was officially branded Howling Cow!

Howling Cow is still made on campus in the Feldmeier Dairy Processing Lab. The milk and cream come directly from over 300 NC State cows on the farm in Raleigh. And the beloved ice cream is still served on NC State University’s campus, and the occasional participating Harris Teeter.
