West District 4-H Teen Retreat 2023 Information

Attention Jackson County Teens!

District Teen Retreat is right around the corner and Jackson County is attending this year! I am excited to start some 4-H programming as the new agent with the Teen Retreat. I am looking forward to meeting some of the wonderful teens involved in Jackson County 4-H.

This year’s West Teen Retreat will be April 21-22 at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River. The theme of the retreat is Make Waves: It’s Your Turn to Change the World! This is going to be an exciting opportunity for youth ages 13-18 to learn about exciting careers and research, and take part in hands-on experiments in the Center’s labs and facilities. There will still be traditional teen retreat activities as well, such as elections, workshops, a spirit stick competition, and fun! Here is the tentative schedule: 2023 Tentative WD 4-H Teen Retreat Schedule

Participants have the option of participating in the Teen Retreat Lock-In on April 21st, or participating in only the day activities on April 22nd. Lock-In participants will be sleeping in the large conference room, which will be divided into sections and supervised by agents, volunteers, and staff.

What to bring: 4-H’ers participating in the lock-in will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, overnight toiletries, appropriate sleepwear, required medication, and clothing for Saturday. Please make sure your teen has CLOSE-TOED shoes for the activities taking place in the labs and fields. Shower facilities are not available for this event.

Cost is $60, and includes Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch, snacks, workshops, a t-shirt, and the dance. If your teen would like to attend, please bring a check to our office by April 3 at 12:00 p.m. You can write your check to Jackson County 4-H. Additionally, please notify our office if you will be driving your teen or if they will need transportation. There is limited seating in our 4-H van, so please let us know as soon as possible if this is the case.

If your teen is interested in running for district office: nominations for District Secretary/Treasurer, Reporter, and Member Engagement will be taken from the floor at the Teen Retreat. Those being nominated from the floor MUST complete and bring in a District Officer Nomination Form with all signatures needed (parent, 4 other county 4-H members, 4-H Agent, and County Extension Director), as well as my endorsement as agent, in order to be nominated at Teen Retreat. 4-H’ers who do not have this form completed at Teen Retreat will NOT be eligible for nomination. Please request this form from me if your teen will be running.

IMPORTANT: your teen must be actively enrolled in 4-HOnline to attend Teen Retreat. Please complete your enrollments as soon as possible if your teen plans to attend. We will only accept payments for enrolled 4-H’ers.

This opportunity is for ANY 4-H member ages 13 and older. We don’t care how long you’ve been in 4-H because this is a great time to learn more about the program and meet other 4-H’ers from Western NC. We highly encourage our new 4-H members to participate as well. It’s going to be a GREAT time!

Feel free to give me a call with any questions or concerns you have! I look forward to getting to know your teens at the Teen Retreat!
