This year’s weather patterns have been a real challenge for gardens, flocks and beehives. Some folks had success with certain types and varieties, while others of us didn’t have stellar results. However, congratulations to those whose efforts paid off! Let’s celebrate them this month!

County fairs are community celebrations that bring everyone together each year. Friends and neighbors come together to socialize, learn and enjoy good local food and entertainment. This year the Swain County Fair on August 23rd & 24th is even bigger and better than last year, complete with judging of vegetables, eggs, flowers and honey; agricultural demos; craft vendors; food vendors and live music!! On Friday the 23rd from 5-7 p.m. there will be Livestock Shows and Food Trucks, and on Saturday the 24th from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. even more fun that you’d want from a Country Festival including a live concert by MCA Nashville recording artist Catie Offerman.

In the spirit of embracing the tradition of celebrating and showcasing our best harvests, this year’s festival invites our friends and neighbors in the surrounding area to bring their successes to the fair and enter the judging contest. Compete and show off your Garden Vegetables, Fruits, Eggs, Flowers or Honey. You may win a ribbon and are sure to have a great time!

This year’s Exhibit is organized into Youth and Adult divisions:

Youth (8-18 years)

Division A:  Ages 5-8 ~ Non-Competitive

Division B:  Ages 9-13

Division C: Ages 14-18

Division D: Special Needs All Ages ~ Non-Competitive

Adult (19+) Division E: Adult
